The Arncliffe to Rockdale 11kV Feeders project was required to reconfigure the 11kV network in the Rockdale/Arncliffe areas by supplying load from the newly constructed Rockdale Zone Substation, facilitating retirement of Arncliffe Zone Substation.
CORE REQUIREMENTS
- 2,450m of 9 way 150mm conduits trenched in the roadway
- Design and install HDD under the Illawarra Railway line
- 2,500m of 300mm Cu3 11kV Triplex cable installed
- 58 x 500mm Cu3 11kV XLPE straight through joints (STJ’s)
- 10 x 300mm Cu3 11kV Triplex to 500mm Cu3 11kV XLPE 3/1 joints

CHALLENGES
- Over 2,000m3 of rock removed (up to 50mpA)
- Challenging process on a large scale of steel plates in the roadway (Thermal Stabilised Bedding for backfill)
- Installation of up to 80m3 of TSB per day (delivered by agitator)
- At the project peak, 25 workers on site
- Logistics of cable drums up to 10 tonnes
- Affected receivers and removal of rock saw a two night per week constraint placed on construction at Forest Road, Princes HWY and Bestic Street
- Maintaining zone of influence controls in single lane closures
- Championed method for excavation over and under transmission feeders (33kV to 132kV)
